Effect of transforming growth factor alpha overexpression on urogenital organ development in mouse.

No Comments   Posted by Doctor |  Category:Treatment

In conclusion, our results suggest that TGFalpha overexpression in mouse urogenital organs alone may not be responsible for tumor formation and epithelial hyperplasia, but is involved in bladder outlet obstruction.

Effect of NAT2 gene polymorphism on bladder cancer risk in Slovak population.

No Comments   Posted by Doctor |  Category:Treatment

Authors: Klimčáková L, Habalová V, Sivoňová M, Nagy V, Salagovič J, Zidzik J
N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) is phase II enzyme with major roles in catalyzing the detoxification of aromatic amines, which are known risk factors for bladder cancer, and are ubiquitously present in the environment. We assessed the association between common polymorphisms in NAT2 gene and the risk of bladder cancer in 90 Slovak patients and 274 ethnicity-matched healthy controls. Effect modifications by smoking, age and gender were also evaluated. Overall, NAT2 slow acetylation was associated with significantly increased risk of bladder cancer (OR = 1.90; 95% CI, 1.15-3.16). In stratified analyses by age and gender, the elevated risk conferred by slow acetylator genotype was evident in old… Source: MedWorm: Bladder Cancer

The effect of alpha-blocker treatment on bladder hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha regulation during lower urinary tract obstruction

CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with α-blockers in obstructed patients considered as non-responders, does not result in HIF-1α down regulation, thus bladder continues to be under chronic stress. (Source: International Braz J Urol)

The incidence of venous thromboembolism and its effect on survival among patients with primary bladder cancer

No Comments   Posted by Doctor |  Category:Treatment

The incidence, risk factors, time course, and impact on survival of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in a large, population-based study of patients with bladder cancer have not been identified previously. The California Cancer Registry was merged with the California Patient Discharge Data Set to determine the incidence of VTE in patients with newly diagnosed bladder cancer within a 6-year period. Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the risk factors for VTE and the effects of VTE on survival.Among 24,861 patients with bladder cancer, the 2-year incidence of VTE was 1.9%. The highest incidence of VTE occurred in the first 6 months regardless of age, sex, race, tumor stage, or histologic subtype. In a multivariate model, significant risk factors for the development of VTE includ…

Effect of a minimum lymph node policy in radical cystectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy on lymph node yields, lymph node positivity rates, lymph node density, and survivorship in patients with bladder cancer

No Comments   Posted by Doctor |  Category:Treatment

Extended pelvic lymphadenectomy (PLND) during radical cystectomy (RC) reportedly improves bladder cancer-specific survival. Lymph node counts are often a proxy for the extensiveness of a dissection. In the current study, the impact of an institutional policy requiring a minimum number of lymph nodes was assessed.Patients undergoing RC and PLND for invasive bladder cancer between March 2000 and February 2008 were retrospectively reviewed at the study institution. Beginning March 1, 2004, a policy was established that at least 16 lymph nodes had to be examined. Specimens with (Source: Cancer) Source: MedWorm: Bladder Cancer

Study: Medicare plan to save money for cancer procedures produced opposite effect

No Comments   Posted by Doctor |  Category:Treatment

Following the Medicare reimbursement plan of 2005, which increased payments to physicians for outpatient surgeries for bladder cancer, a dramatically higher number of bladder cancer cases were treated in the outpatient or physician office setting, but the number of hospital-based bladder cancer procedures did not significantly decline, according to a report published today in Cancer.
