Conclusions IFS causes important changes in the micturition physiology in rats, and the inhibition of the isoenzyme COX-2 could be an
important event that could prevent the detrimental effects elicited by IFS-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

Procedures performed in the office offer potential cost savings. Recent analyses suggest, however, that a fee-for-service system may incentivize subscale operations and, thus, contribute to excessive spending. The authors of this report sought to characterize changes in the practice of office-based and hospital-based endoscopic bladder surgery after 2005 increases in Medicare reimbursement. All office and hospital-based endoscopic surgeries that were performed in a faculty practice from 2002 through 2007 were identified using billing codes for procedures, diagnoses, and procedure locations and then analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. Costs were estimated based on published Medicare reimbursements for office and hospital-based surgeries. In total, 1341 endoscopic bladd…

The aim of this study was to assess the penile vascular changes in post-radical cystectomy patients. A prospective assessment took place between January 2003 and January 2005 of 45 potent men who underwent radical cystectomy and diversion for invasive bladder cancer. Nerve sparing (NS) technique was applied in 21 cases, while others were not subjected to NS (non-nerve sparing group; NNS = 24 cases). All patients were comparable in preoperative clinical and pathological parameters. A control arm was the preoperative normal indices of the same patients. Preoperative penile duplex ultrasounds (PDU) for all cases were carried out, and then follow-up 2, 6 and 12 months thereafter. On first postoperative visit, none of NS cases showed any arterial insufficiency, while two cases of NNS (8.3%) had…

A 2005 increase in Medicare reimbursement to encourage office-based endoscopic surgeries for bladder
cancer instead of more costly hospital surgeries had the unintended effect of disproportionately increasing
in-office procedures and driving up Medicare costs, according to a study published online Feb. 8 in
Cancer. (Source: Modern Medicine Medical Economics)
