CONCLUSIONS: Having biological materials characterized and available along with the clinical patient information provides an integrated portrait of the patients and their diseases facilitating advances in molecular biology. It also promotes the development of translational research improving methods of diagnosis and cancer treatment. (Source: International Braz J Urol) Source: MedWorm: Bladder Cancer

more...Plasmacytoma is a rare B-lymphocyte neoplastic disorder that usually presents as the generalized disease multiple myeloma. Less than 5% of the cases present as a solitary mass of monoclonal plasma cells in the bone or soft tissue. Although solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) may arise in any organ, it rarely involves the urinary bladder. A 67-year-old male without a history of multiple myeloma presented with urinary frequency and nocturia; he was later diagnosed with SEP of the bladder. The patient was initially treated with a course of radiation therapy without symptomatic improvement; therefore a chemotherapy regimen consisting of lenalidomide and dexamethasone was subsequently given for six cycles. SEP usually carries a better prognosis and higher cure rate than solitary plasmacy… Source: MedWorm: Bladder Cancer

a 64-year-old man, obtained by transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT), is reported. In the present case, a characteristic
sig component was detected in approximately 20% of UC, G2 tissues. The sig cells were morphologically similar to those found
in gastric cancers and were positively stained with periodic acid-Schiff reaction and Alcian blue and mucicarmine stains.
Immunohistochemically, the sig cells were selectively positive for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), MUC2, and MUC5AC. These
immunohistochemical characteristics were similar to those of sig cells in the stomach, except for the positivity with MUC2.
It is interesting to no…

Imatinib mesylate has revolutionized the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), providing an excellent disease control and showing a satisfactory tolerance . However, due to a relatively short period of about 10 years of the clinical experience with this drug, a possible contribution of imatinib to the development of secondary neoplasms has not been definitively determined. Recently, Frustaci et al. reported on the occurrence of colon adenocarcinoma in 2 out of 150 CML late chronic phase patients treated with imatinib. In 2005, Roy et al. documented an unexpected occurrence of second malignancies, particularly those originating from the uroepithelial tissue in 6/189 CML patients treated with interferon-α (IFN-α) followed by imatinib. This series included 3 cases of a prostate cance…

Based on the results, it is concluded the multiple biopsies from normal-appearing urothelium are not necessary in patients with negative cytology results because of the low detection rate and lack of influence on therapeutic decisions. Meanwhile, biopsy of suspicious-appearing urothelium is needed in patients with negative cytology results in order to detect CIS due to staging properties. This result supports a recent EAU guideline. (Source: BMC Urology – Latest articles)

Abstract A 74-year-old female was referred to our hospital for non-muscle invasive bladder tumors initially treated at another hospital.
Preoperatively, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated non-muscle invasive bladder tumors and a vaginal
tumor. A second transurethral resection of the bladder tumors, transvaginal tumor resection, and systemic chemotherapy were
performed. The histopathological appearances of both tumors were very similar and the diagnoses were urothelial carcinoma
(UC). The pathogenesis of the vaginal UC was considered to be the primary UC or metastasis from the bladder UC. Vaginal UC
is extremely rare and this is only the 15th report in the literature.

At the age of 31 years, the patient was operated of bladder papillary superficial carcinoma; five years later, he was treated for a high grade pleomorphe sarcoma of the left thigh and treated by surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At the age of 38 years, after abdominal pain, radiologic examination reveled pancreatic tumor with bone and lymphatic metastases. The patient died one month later from pulmonary embolism. Sequencing revealed a germiline mutation of this patient that was confirmed in a member of his family in codon 1009C>T, protein Arg337Cys, exon 10 of TP53 gene this mutation was revealed in his nephew (died at the age of 20 from bone sarcoma).

We report a case of a patient with metastatic bladder cancer, signet-ring cell variant. The patient progressed rapidly on standard first-line bladder cancer chemotherapy with gemcitabine and carboplatin. He responded well to second-line capecitabine with a clinically meaningful progression-free survival.
